A Wiltshire classic and vintage car auction held on Saturday made more than half a million pounds.
The sale held at the Castle Combe race circuit near Chippenham consisted largely of the collection of the late Phil Lomax, a local man well known for his love of all things mechanical. He sadly passed away earlier this year.
He was an avid collector and his 16 cars and 30 bikes were all in the auction, the pick being a 1955 Aston Martin DB2/4 that made a staggering £58,000 - £18,000 over estimate.
The motorbike section of the auction also contributed to the huge total when bidders spent over £90,000 before commission on classic Triumphs, Douglas’s and Scott to name but a few.
Auctioneer Richard Edmonds was surprised by the result. “It was a fabulous collection and really made the sale, great prices were paid right across the board.” He said. “We had bidders come from all over the world to the sale and phone bids from some seriously exotic climbs. It was far and away our busiest sale to date.
“Included in the collection were three fabulous examples of the Morgan three wheeler from the 1930’s, these were particularly special as Morgan are about to go into reproduction of this famous model. The red ’34 that we had was particularly special and made £33,000, an astronomical sum for these economical times but a truly remarkable machine.”
Richard Edmonds next classic and vintage car auction will be held in early next year.
