The Mid-Wiltshire Schools Sports Partnership is considering its future after all its funding fell victim to the Government cutbacks.

The partnership, based at Devizes School sports college, is set to lose the funding for sports competitions from next March and its total funding from next August.

The partnership organises sports events at all primary and secondary schools across the centre of the county and other activities to encourage children to take part in sport and take more exercise.

But funding is being lost as part of the Coalition Government’s spending review.

Some £160million is being cut from sports partnerships across the country.

Lee Ward, senior competition manager for the Mid-Wilts partnership, said: “The only way the partnership might survive is if schools buy into it themselves.

“We will be having a meeting next week, after half term, to talk about the options.”

The cuts have been met with astonishment from charities that support youth sport.

Steve Grainger, chief executive of the Youth Sport Trust, said: “The 450 School Sport Partnerships across the country have provided millions of hours of coaching, created thousands of new links between schools and clubs and introduced over a million more young people to competitive sport over the last three years.

“The cuts are staggering given the transformational change that has been created and the incredible results which have been delivered in school sport.

“With just 21 months to go until the start of the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, Lord Coe’s pledge to use the Games to transform sporting opportunities for young people is now hanging in the balance.

“In these very challenging times, what does not change is our determination to continue using sport as a way of increasing young people’s aspiration and achievement.

“We remain fully focused on improving the PE and sport experience for every young person and will work to ensure that sport remains at the heart of school life.”
