Villagers between Devizes and Pewsey Vale isolated as night bus axed

People who use the Night Taxi Buzz are devastated that a last ditch attempt to save the service has failed.

Nine protesters presented a 202 signature petition to a full meeting of Wiltshire Council in Trowbridge on Tuesday.

The petition, organised by Kennet Passengers, called for the service to continue but the Conservative-led council said it was too expensive.

The service operates between 6.15pm and 10.15pm weekdays between Devizes and villages in the Pewsey Vale.

Suzanne Robertson and her son Nathan, 18, do not know how they will get home to All Cannings once the service is withdrawn on May 28.

Mrs Robertson, 38, works part time at Tesco in Devizes while her son is an apprentice hairdresser in Devizes.

Mrs Robertson said: “I use the Night Buzz three or four times a week while Nathan uses it every day.

“We don’t have a car in our family and I can’t afford £15 in taxi fares. I am going to have to ask my boss if I can change my hours at work.”

Kate Freeman, transport advisor to Kennet Passengers, disputed the council’s figures on running costs and said that useage would increase with better marketing.

She said: “There was no substantive debate at the council meeting. Devizes Guardians spoke up for us and the Liberal Democrats sympathised with the plight of young people but it came down to party lines.”

Coun Dick Tongue, Cabinet member for transport, said: “The issue is that the subsidy for the Night Taxi Buzz service was huge and we couldn’t sustain it.”

It's shocking that this cut is going ahead when Wiltshire Council is wasting millions on refurbishing County Hall. The subsidy is hardly 'huge' as the whole service is costing only £50k and the operator had offered to cut the cost to £25k. Wiltshire - where everyone matters as long as they have a car.

Wiltshire Council made it very difficult indeed to book the bus if you were an inexperienced or occasional user. Some have commented that this was done on purpose to keep ridership down and make it easier to justify removing this service.

The new council was supposed to save money. Instead, they’ve put our council taxes up and they’re cutting services. Disgraceful.

And just look at the last couple of members who've had responsibility for transport. I don't believe that Mr Tonge is a regular user and I fancy that his predecessor wouldn't have known a bus if it had run into the back of her Merc.

Appropriately enough the security phrase I have to enter is 'many-blow'.

But Wiltshire Council has enough money to shift a crossing outside a pub in Devizes, where there have not been any serious accidents. They also had enough money to pay the road workers overtime till 11 to wait for tarmac to arrive the following day. At least we know where the priorities are, the new crossing removes half a taxi bay as well.

anyone asked how Devizes Taxis were able to cut their fee by 50%?

Why did they set this service up in the first place, if not to help those in need?

And what are we paying 2.5% more in council tax if we can't afford to continue help?

Wiltshire have peddled the argument that it's unfair that not all other communities have an evening service. So why set up this service in the first place? It recognises that we need to make sure people have transport after 5.30 - or are we to have notices outside every village declaring "residents with cars only".
