Coffee stirs it up in Chippenham

Traders in Chippenham have hit out at plans to turn the former Woolworth’s into a Costa coffee shop.

Half of the store reopened this week with as Poundland. Costa is awaiting planning permission to change use of the other space from retail to selling food and drink.

Victor Mandryko, of Salad Select in the Market Place, said: “Chippenham is being destroyed by its local authorities. There are already too many coffee shops.

“I don’t mind competition but let’s not kill off all the smaller independents which are the backbone of the community.

“It is the people that run the independent shops who live here and want the best for the town. The big chains aren’t here to support Chippenham, they just want to make money.

“We already have Starbucks, Subway and Greggs within 200 yards of each other.

“When Woolworth’s closed it was the ideal opportunity to do something positive and instead they’ve put in a pound shop and a coffee shop. The town centre is dying.”

Bob Perks of the Chippenham Chamber of Commerce said it wasn’t sour grapes from shop owners.

“It is not about coffee shop owners opposed to competition. The biggest concern is losing prime retail space.

“When Costa applied to take over the shop that is now the Officers’ Club, their application was turned down.

“It seems bizarre that now they want to move into an even more important retail area we would be ok with it.

“The town desperately needs some serious retail, we have plenty of phone shops, charity shops and coffee shops.”

A coffee shop owner who didn’t want to be named said Costa wouldn’t help the jobs market.

She said: “Stating there will be a number of jobs created is naive. The effect on other businesses will be felt, particularly as this brand is well known for its aggressive marketing and willingness to trade at a loss to achieve market share.”

Mike Bryant from Lone Eagle Retail, which owns the property, said there were no department stores looking to occupy the space. He hoped to have planning permission and a lease agreed with Costa by the end of the month.

Chippenham really does NOT need another cafe/bank/phone shop or estate agent. The town's high street is abismal I rarely use is now adays and I have lived here for 30 years. We never really needed another pound shop. The funniest thing is now you have to pay for parking in the town whereas when we had the best shops here we got an hour free! Work that one out?

I think you will find that there is not a Greggs in Chippenham it's a Bakers Oven!!!
I also think that it is good Costa wants to come to Chippenham as this will mean one less empty shop in the high street which can only be good!!!!!

Bakers oven is part of the Greggs group. Although we have several coffee shops in Chippenham, we dont have any decent coffee shops that serve high quality products worth spending money on! And I totally agree with the above, it is better than seeing another empty shop... As for Poundland, all the people that slatted it and commented on how we dont need another one, the shop is constantly busy and can you honestly tell me that you haven't and will never, shop there!

I really like Costa's coffee, but agree we have alot of coffee shops already.
This town is such a dump, if it wasn't for the fact I could drive and get out of this place, I would have gone mad by now!!

If the council sorted out the parking issues in Chippenham more high street retailers would want to move in. The fact that we have insufficient parking for the size of the town and surrounding areas is a major paroblem that needs to be looked at.

oooh yey another coffee shop... just what we need... id rather see a new newsagents or something locallly run there to provide the 'market' town a local feel and support the local retailers than a new coffee shop!!!! so now chippenham town centre will be made up of phone shops, coffee shops, travel agents, estate agents, pound shops and charity shops... so all those who are saving pennies buying in charity shops can book holidays, buy expensive coffee, a house or get a new contract phone!! i dont think thats quite the idea!!!

What the Council want to see is a Charity shop that sells mobile phones and coffee, it would be a sure fine winner and would not require any planning permission. Under this council the town is going backwards and down market, Melksham gets a Waitrose, Chippenham gets a Poundland, what does that tell you?

It tells me that the town has far too many whingers who complain about everyting, want it all done for them and aren't prepared to get up off their backsides to do it themselves.
