Quizzes, singing competitions and even a cider fest are some of the ingredients that could make up the return of a music and arts festival to Wootton Bassett in June.

Festival committee member Kerrie Dixon said: "We want to make the festival different from anything else that's going on and for it not to overlap with things like the High Street Festival or the Carnival.

"We've got lots of ideas including displays of the visual arts in and around the town's shops and restaurants. That would bring people into the places around the town and then once in they might stop and have a cup of tea as well."

At last week's meeting the committee discussed possible plans for the festival.

Mrs Dixon, who spent five years singing in cabaret shows with the Moonlight Shadow band, said: "We need to get moving now and anyone who wants to get involved, even doing things like distributing the programmes and flyers, is welcome to give me a call."

After leaving the band in 1990 Mrs Dixon, who is now a town councillor, was a solo artist for two years singing cover versions in pubs across Wiltshire. Although she retired from singing to bring up her two children she says there might be a comeback during the festival. She said: "I definitely still get the itch to sing and I'd be very tempted to do it again if there was a suitable band at the festival."

The committee has sent out questionnaires to all the art and drama groups in the town inviting their views and comments.

Brian Taylor, member of the Arts and Music Committee and president of the town's chamber of commerce, said: "We want to make sure that we get all the groups involved that we think should be, but it is a two way thing and we're happy to hear from any groups we missed out."

The next meeting will be at noon on Monday at the Cross Keys pub, High Street. Anyone is welcome to attend and get involved. For more information call Mrs Dixon on (01793) 850986 or Brian Taylor on (01793) 840445.
