76733-190SENIOR citizens have been getting crafty at their weekly club. Pensioners from the North Dorcan Senior Citizens' Club held an Easter bonnet parade at their weekly get together.

And, Swindon's Mayor, Coun Peter Stoddart, was on hand to judge the winners.

The club meets at St Paul's Church Centre in Covingham.

To add a little sparkle to their Easter celebrations they decided an Easter bonnet competition would be a good idea.

Coun Stoddart said: "They had taken some time over their designs."

From traditional designs featuring yellow chicks and eggs to more wacky designs, all the bonnets looked very striking.

One particularly interesting bonnet was former Swindon mayor's Derek Benfield's.

He had based it on an Australian theme with Easter chicks hanging on strings instead of corks.

The winner of the competition was Grace Smith, with Erna Bulley in second place and Mr Benfield in third place.

Coun Stoddart said: "I judged the winner before they put the bonnets on so that it was fair."

He added: "I enjoyed the hot cross bun and cup of tea they gave me too."

The pensioners pay just 50p a week to attend the club.

Coun Stoddart said: "This competition was really good, were all friends and we had a good time."
