Nappy project attracts funds

WILTSHIRE Wildlife Trust has scooped £100,000 in grants for its real nappy project.

The project aims to get parents to use reusable nappies on their babies rather than disposable nappies.

A total of £70,000 has been given towards the project from the community recycling and economic development programme through the Big Lottery Fund's transforming waste initiative, with Wiltshire County Council pledging £30,000 in match funding.

The money will allow the project to continue for a further two years following the success of a one year pilot.

Real nappy co-ordinator Jacky Thomas said: "In the last year we have set up a network of mums, dads, midwives and others, who have been spreading the word that real nappies are cheap to buy, easy to use and more environmentally friendly than disposables."

She said the image of safety pins and a tangled mass of terry towelling is no longer relevant.

She said: "Real nappies today are brightly coloured, fastened with Velcro and they don't leak. There are several varieties of nappy, but they can be washed in a washing machine in eco friendly detergent."
