Fire crews from across the county have been called to a thatched cottage blaze in the village of Marden, near Devizes. The fire is in a property known as Apple Tree Cottage not far from the Triple Crown pub.
It is understood the owners did not realise their roof was on fire until a passerby spotted the smoke coming from the thatch and raised the alarm.
Nine fire crews from Devizes, Trowbridge and Salisbury attended the scene, using two jets and two hosereels.
Fire officers clambered onto the roof with ladders and dragged off the smouldering thatch, using fire hoses to dowse the flames in the roofspace.
The incident is due to continue for some hours as firefighters want to make sure the fire is completely out.
The road through the village is closed until later on today and motorists are asked to make alternative arrangements.
