Former Wiltshire policeman killed in Trinidad crash

A former Wiltshire Police officer now based in Trinidad was killed in a car crash on Sunday.

Ian Parry, 47, formerly of Malmesbury, died when his Nissan Almera crashed into traffic lights at 12.50am on the Socorro intersection of the Churchill Roosevelt Highway in Port of Spain.

Mr Parry was a trainer attached to the Special Anti Crime Unit of Trinidad and Tobago. He had served with the Wiltshire force for 20 years.

Police said he he lost control of his vehicle and struck the traffic lights at the junction.

Another vehicle travelling behind Parry’s car also crashed. The driver is in a stable condition in hospital.

Police at the scene said Mr Parry’s car flipped over several times,.

An SAUTT spokesman said Mr Parry was a senior trainer and had been with the unit since 2006.

He was heading to his home at Trincity, when his car collided with the traffic light pole.

SAUTT director Brigadier Peter Joseph said: "Ian’s death has come as a dreadful shock to everyone at SAUTT. He was a very professional trainer, who was also a larger-than-life character.

"Ian will be remembered for his commitment, friendliness and helpfulness, as well as his sense of humour and booming laugh. Although he came to us from England, Ian was very much part of the SAUTT family.

"He loved Trinidad and Tobago and was dedicated to helping to make this a better place to live. He was a very popular man and will be sorely missed by all who knew him. My thoughts and sympathy go out to Ian’s colleagues, many friends and family."

SAUTT is liaising with Mr Parry's family in England over funeral arrangements.

Ian was an amazing man, he was a close family friend so thoughtful and such a wonderful person to be around. He made so much effort to help other people and this terrible new has saddened so many people. He wouldn't want people to be sad as he was such a happy person and will always be remembered. Rest in Peace Love always Sarah King

I would like to pay tribute to Ian, a wonderful friend and scholar.
I met Ian for the first time in Bosnia a decade ago, a warm and forthcoming character, always lively and laughing, supporting and compassionate. Now it’s so very hard not to be sad, I hope you’ll forgive my ample tears.
But if in the end, it's not the years in your life that count, but the life in your years, I can surely say your life was large.
Let us be grateful to people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.
So say it loud and let it ring
We are all a part of everything
The future, present and the past
Fly on proud bird
You're free at last.
