Guide to running is updated by Pewsey man

European gold medal distance runner Bruce Tulloh, who lives in the Pewsey Vale, has brought out a second edition of his book Running is Easy, first published 12 years ago.

Tulloh, 74, who lives at West Stowell near Pewsey said: “It covers the whole spectrum from complete beginner to international marathon level and includes training for track, road and cross country running.”

Tulloh was famed for running barefoot and he won gold at 5,000m in the European Championships in Belgrade in 1962.

He took up running while doing his National Service in Hong Kong in 1955 and within four years he was winning British AAA distance titles. In 1960 he set a new UK three- mile record.

He was in the 1960 Olympic squad in Rome but was unable to acclimatise to the heat and was eliminated in his 5,000m race.

In 1962 he set a UK two-mile record and just three days later ran his one and only sub-four minute mile coming second to Peter Snell who set a new world record.

In 1969 he set a new record for running trans-America from Los Angeles to New York in 65 days.

Tulloh came to Marlborough in 1973 and taught biology at the college for more than 20 years as well as coaching athletics.

His twin daughters Jojo and Katherine both won English schools titles on the track and his son Clive spent two years at Boston University on a running scholarship.

Tulloh can still be seen running near his home where he lives with wife, Sue.

His book is on sale at £15 at the White Horse Bookshop in Marlborough or from www.tullohbooks.com.
