UFO spotted in Calne

Baffled Trevor Vincent has been left in the dark after spotting strange lights in the sky above Calne on Saturday night.

Mr Vincent, of Westerham Walk in Calne, was enjoying a barbecue at a friend’s house when something moving quickly across the sky caught his eye.

He said: “It was a nice starry night so we were outside having a look at the stars.

“We saw a shooting star cross the sky, which always takes you aback.

“Then at about 10.35pm we spotted an orange light moving fairly fast in the sky from the western side - it was racing along.

“We had only just been talking about these sorts of lights because I have seen them before.

“I saw one of them and said ‘look, it’s one of those lights’, then there were two, then another and then four.

“They just kept coming.”

The 47-year-old dad of two described two of the lights as moving together, before one overtook the other and was then overtaken by the second light.

“We were totally amazed,” he said. “They all joined in and this went on for about 15 minutes - the kids were all taking pictures.

“We were all gobsmacked.

“They definitely were not planes because they were totally quiet.”

Shortly afterwards Mr Vincent said passing clouds obstructed their view of the lights - which he has witnessed before.

“We saw around five on New Year’s Eve, but they disappeared,” he said. “Then I saw them a couple of weeks ago again.

“Other people must have seen them and I just want to know what they were.

“We would like to think they were UFOs, but there must be some explanation.

“This is not something you see every day.

“My daughter is always star watching and we see the odd sattelite going across, but you can tell what they are - these were something else.”

A Ministry of Defence UFO report of 2008 details a similar sighting in September when five brightly glowing orange orbs were seen flying silently above Calne.

For goodness sake...were you all drinking to excess. They were chinese lanterns. What gave it away was the fact thjat they lanterns...from china...and had little candles in them. Mind you if you looked to the left over the off-licence there was a space ship.....or was it a lamp post?

I remember when I was young and was petrified when I saw flares going up on Salisbury Plain. It took my dad ages to convince me that it wasn't E.T coming to get me! I'm sure there's an explanation behind these strange lights.

Oh dear

I have been interested in ufos for over a decade. All over the world military officials, pilots and other credible people are reporting bizarre craft and light configurations. There is even a movement of these people called the DISCLOSURE PROJECT. However these most certainly were Chinese Lanterns. I saw them myself and one was low enough to make out its structure.

If the lanterns had the same size candles, and were lit at the same time, when do you think they would extinguish?
A: At the same time
B: Over a 10 minute period
C: Craig David
D:Never, they're lit by gas.

There were indeed "Sky Lanterns". We released them from a house in Calne town centre and after ascending to about 50ft they began to drift westerly whilst still climbing, towards Cherhill. We have set these off at least 4 times in the last year. To be honest we only released 5 on Saturday, there were already around 20-25 drifting past us when we activated ours.

100% Chinese sky lanterns... Saw a load being set off in the Yewstock area of Chippenham at about the time stated in the article. They were set off all about the same time and travelled very quickly in the direction of Calne

I like how someone said...
"I have no idea what they were but they were not lanterns ,they wouldnt all go at the same time."

They've immediately jumped to the UFO conclusion rather than looking at any evidence...

Shame on you Gazette & Herald, you must have known full well that these sightings were chinese lanterns (as were the ones in Sept 2008).
Not much news about then that day?
