Arty weekend for Wiltshire youngsters

Young people will be taking part in a wide variety of activities ranging from dance workshops to power kiting as part of a special two-day series of events.

Wiltshire Council is organising the events to highlight what is on offer for local young people. Youth centres and a range of young people’s projects across Wiltshire are going to open their doors on Friday and Saturday 10 and 11 of July. A range of activities and events are planned across the weekend, with many going on into the evening to ensure young people can access them.

Examples of events include alternative Olympics in Purton, a night-walk in Chippenham, a barbeque and sports evening in Mere, a filming workshop in Salisibury and a dance workshop in Pewsey. There are also numerous trips and working groups getting together, from a trip to the NAS Extreme Sports Event in Westbury to Wiltshire Assembly of Youth focus groups meeting in Devizes.

Throughout the two days Spark Radio, a web based radio station hosted by young people, will run 24 hours a day with regular DJ’s covering what’s happening and roving reporters feeding back from different activities.

Some of the activities going on over the weekend will be new while others are regular activities that take place but will hopefully attract in some new young people. Lionel Grundy, cabinet member for children’s services, said: “We are committed to providing a wide range of activities for local young peope and these events aim to showcase the fantastic opportunities available throughout Wiltshire.”
