St Mary’s Church of England Primary School has received an award for encouraging budding artists.
The school, in College Road, has been awarded an Artsmark Silver by the Arts Council after a series of projects with local artists.
Headteacher Ian Tucker said: “I’m delighted that the Arts Council has recognised St Mary’s dynamic arts education programme.
“Our children have really enjoyed working with different artists, and I’d like to thank all our staff for their hard work in achieving this award.
“We are very fortunate to have so many staff and members of our community who have a real talent and passion for the arts.
“We are particularly grateful to Helen Fudge, for her drive and enthusiasm as music co-ordinator, who was instrumental in achieving this award.”
The school needed to dedicate 12 per cent of teaching to the arts in order to gain the award. It is one of 1,650 schools receiving the award this year.
Arts Council England south west executive director Chris Humphrey said: “Artsmark sets the standard for outstanding arts in schools and this Silver Artsmark Award recognises St Mary’s passion for the arts and belief in the power of creativity.
“It’s great to see the enthusiasm the award encourages in the teachers, students and local communities – they should be proud of what they have achieved.”
