Chippenham set for arts bonanza

Monkton Park will become a sea of colour this weekend when the annual Art in the Park event kicks off on Saturday.

The two day exhibition, organised by Chippenham Rotary Club, will be raising money for a hydrotherapy pool at St Nicholas School.

The campaign, called SNAP, was launched in 2004 and has so far raised £300,000 of the £500,000 target for the pool which will help improve the mobility of pupils at the school.

The fun begins on Saturday at 1pm with an art exhibition in the studio hall at the Olympiad leisure centre, where work will be displayed by local artists and schools will also be showing artwork from their pupils.

As well as the art exhibition on Sunday, which will be open from 11am to 5pm, Monkton Park will be transformed into The Street, where there will be a craft marquee, workshop marquee for children to have free hands-on creative experiences, demonstrations, educational stands, competitions and games.

BBC presenter Amanda Parr, who is patron for SNAP, will be in the park throughout the day, as well as a bagpipe band, belly dancing, magicians, horse rides and owl demonstrations.

A spokesman for the Chippenham Rotary Club said: “Our objective is to raise enough money to build a quality hydrotherapy pool for the children of the school and also out of school hours make it available to the local community via perhaps the NHS or other medical body.

“Art in the Park is just one of the events that we run to raise funds for SNAP - this is our second year, so come along and enjoy a relaxing and enjoyable time out.

“There is something for everyone - from 0 to 11 years old.”
