Gypsies move on to land in Calne

Families living in Calne have hit out at gypsies who moved their 12 caravans onto a empty site in the town over the weekend.
The caravans were moved into the field in Lansdowne Park, opposite Honeysuckle Close, on Saturday but Wiltshire Council officials have said the families are only staying on the site temporarily for the next ten days.
A worried neighbour said: "I am shocked they have managed to get away with this and that no action appears to have been taken.
"The land is owned by Persimmon construction but when they finished building here it seems like they just left that field empty and it is now used for dog walkers.
"I feel they have a duty of care to the people of Calne to make sure a field like that is secured and they have failed to do this.
"I have no idea how long these travellers are intending to stay but I think it is a disgrace it has been allowed to happen in the first place."
A spokesman for Wiltshire Council said they would not be involved at this stage because the land is privately owned and the gypsies have said their stay is temporary.
They said: "If the landowner wanted to evict them it is a civil matter that we would not necessarily be a part of.
"We may become involved at a later stage if it appears the site is becoming more permanent."
The council said that Persimmon, who owns the land, was not taking any action to evict the gypsies.

And why does a worried neighbour say that Persimmon have a duty of care to secure the field? Any number of fields in and around calne are easily accessable so do you hear people bleating about that?
I'm not pro these people far from it but i do not tar everyone with the same brush so shut up until you know the facts! Following a mob mentality makes you no better!

Persimmon do have a duty of care to the residents of calne! At the end of the day any open space such as this must have been seen as a great opportunity for these travellers where they can just roll up and set up camp, You may notice that other fields are gated and those that are not would more than likely be unsuitable to set up camp. Had that been council land it would have been secured and had they forced entry then they would of had 48hrs to leave before being forced to. Had persimmon had planning granted for development i feel there attitude to the travellers may have been different.
Lets not forget they are breaking the law by trespassing.
I hope they are gone in 9 days however past experience of situations like this tell us different and when they do go what state would they leave the place in, if someone has no respect for the law who is to say they have respect for the area or the land.
Lets wait and see in 9 days time who was right and who was wrong?

Are they doing you any harm? Do you walk around the streets checking the tax discs of your neighbours? How many of your self employed neighbours and respectable businessmen are fiddling their tax and expenses like our MP s ?
Calm down and show a bit of tolerance.
I am not too happy with my neighbours but I am not writing insulting letter to the newspapers about them. There are more important things to worry about.

The comments above typify the nimbys in Wiltshire, and before anyone starts ranting at me, yes I do live here, just outside Calne, yes I have had 'contact' with travellers in the past, and no, I don't agree with the majority of you that they are scum...they are people who have a different lifestyle choice, and good luck to them.
That was rather a long sentence before the text police have a go.

how about redstar i come and place a tent on your lawn and crap all over your garden.after all it would be my life style.
some people do like calne and treat the fields as there garden.

It's mugs like the rest of us who have to subsidise scum like this so they can have their totally free way of life - and we end up clearing away their rubbish when they move onto the next patch of land like a plague of locusts. The sooner this country gets tough with low lifes such as the travellers then the better!

I am one of these people that don't like these pikeys. 'Travellers' or 'Gypsies' do not travel about in transit vans, and knock on your door asking to tar mac your drive.
I did notice they took the fence down for access to the field. Shame trespass is a civil offence and not a criminal one.

Have any of you actually SPOKEN to any of these people? Have you seen that they have no tax or insurance, do you have evidence that they do not pay taxes...or, as I suspect, do you just pander to the reactionary headlines of the Daily Mail, The Express, The Sun, and of course the Gazette and Herald.

I'm sure we as tax payers will have to foot the bill unless the kind liberal supporters of the pikey scum like redstar and unionworkeruk will be more than happy to come along and clean up there mess... There is a difference between racism and facts! just like the difference between a true gypsy who takes care of the land and respects it and pikey scum.
Hopefully now persimmon will secure the land and we can start to enjoy the fields where so many walk the dogs.
On a more serious note if it is asbestos then i would advise all to steer well clear as it is carcinogenic. Hopefully environmental services will inform us soon.
