Plans to allow a farm near Calne to be used as venue for weddings and parties were given the go ahead after neighbours who originally opposed the plans backed down.

Wellington Barn, in Calstone-Wellington, was originally granted permission to be used as a function venue for 20 days a year.

But owner David Maundrell, wanted to extend this across the whole year based on the success of the business.

A number of neighbours opposed the plans on the basis of an increase in noise and traffic but after months of negotiations with Mr Maundrell, they came to an agreement.

Mr Maundrell, 33, said: “The two residents who were creating an objection were more concerned about the impact any noise might have.

“I understood their concerns, but at the same time they were about half a mile from the barn.”

After taking advice from an environmental health officer who measured the noise levels from the barn, Mr Maundrell sat down to discuss the plans with the objectors.

He said: “The people concerned were not against the barn, they just did not want to be disturbed.

“By managing the situation ourselves we reached an agreement and by the time of the meeting they were happy to stand up and withdraw their objection.”

Permission was granted with conditions that no external lighting is installed, signs fixed to the walls asking patrons to be quiet when leaving and all windows and doors shut when the farm is in use.

Mr Maundrell said: “I am completely happy to accept the conditions that have been accepted.

“I am the sixth generation of family to be on this farm and this will enable us to stay for generations to come.

“The business can now support the farm and keep it going hopefully for a few more generations at least.”

Although two neighbours dropped their objections, resident Matt Brown remains opposed to the plans.

He said: “To people not living here 20 days a year may seem like a drop in the ocean but 365 days is completely disproportionate.

“Traffic is a huge problem here and my father has nearly been run over twice. The police are now investigating.

“One night last week, between 11.55pm and 12.55am there were 37 vehicles and one coach driving down from here and you just lie awake waiting to hear more.”

The agricultural land has been used as a function venue since Mr Maundrell and his wife Jo set up the business in 2006.

They have said they do not intend to hold functions 365 days a year.
