MP slams loss of public parking at Devizes courts

7:00am Friday 10th April 2009

DEVIZES MP Michael Ancram has described the lack of public parking at a new courts complex as a further blow to local justice.

Devizes magistrates’ court currently in temporary buildings in Northgate Gardens, will move to Wilton Road, Salisbury, in September where it will become part of a complex of magistrates, crown and county courts.

But members of the public who have to drive the 25 miles from Devizes will find there is nowhere to park except the streets or the park-and-ride on the far side of Wilton.

Parking will be provided for court staff, lawyers and police.

Mr Ancram said: “When the decision was taken to close the court in Devizes I warned that it would make it much more difficult for local justice either to be truly local or, indeed, seen to be done.

“It is quite clear that, despite reassurances to the contrary from the Government, this is precisely the case.”
