North Wiltshire MP James Gray has urged local people to pull their finger out and regularly check their smoke detectors.
The MP, who lives near Melksham, joined forces with community safety technicians from Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service to promote the importance of fire safety in the home.
He said: “I have smoke detectors in my house and I regularly check them to make sure they are working properly. Statistics show that, while the majority of people now do have smoke detectors in their homes, a worryingly large number don’t check them. I fully support the ‘Pull your finger out’ campaign – a few seconds of your time could save your life.”
Every year, people are killed in fires because their smoke alarms had flat or missing batteries and failed to work. Once a week, test the battery by pressing the test button until the alarm sounds. If the alarm ever starts to 'beep' regularly, replace the battery as soon as possible.
Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service offers a range of home fire safety advice, and can make home visits to some households. To find out more, visit www.wiltsfire.gov.uk or call 0800 389 7849.
