Landlords say they are forced out of village

The landlords of the New Inn at Coate, near Devizes, say they have handed in their notice because of the bad vibes created by a planning application.

Dave Conroy and Brian Bennett say that an anonymous objection to their annual bonfire night party was the last straw in a dispute that has split the village.

Mr Conroy said: “This is tearing the village apart and we just can’t take any more. It has created a very bad atmosphere.

“We just can’t stand any more of this constant arguing about it. People can’t talk about it sensibly. It always ends up as a screaming match though so far there hasn’t been any fisticuffs.”

Bishops Cannings Youth Football Club used to play weekend matches in the field beside the pub but brewers Wadworth which owns the New Inn, gave them their marching orders following complaints from Mr Conroy and Mr Bennett.

The club has been playing matches at Green Lane pitches in Devizes but put in an application to construct a pitch with changing rooms in a field at Puddles Lane, Coate.

Kennet District Council has received 82 letters of representation, mostly objecting to the application, and two petitions containing a total of 139 signatures, also against the scheme.

Mr Conroy said: “I am against the idea, but that is not the point. People should be able to discuss their differences in a civilised way, not by screaming at each other. It has definitely ruined the village for us.”

The two men have embraced the slightly Bohemian atmosphere at the pub, reinstating such madcap events as a chariot race and the recreation of a Lancaster bomber using human bodies. Their next event will be a silly games night on November 28 when granny racing will be one of the activities.

Their bonfire night only went ahead after they appealed against Kennet District Council’s decision to impose health and safety regulations, following a complaint that spectators would not be far enough away from the fireworks.

Mr Conroy said: “We will be very sorry to leave. We have really enjoyed most of our two and a half years here.”

They will be moving on to another Wadworth pub, near Wookey Hole in Somerset.

Wadworth chairman Charles Bartholomew said: “It is very sad they have decided to leave. They have been the best licensees we’ve had in the village for some time.

“They have got us to build them a new skittle alley and they have done the pub a lot of good. I am glad we shall be retaining their services, albeit at another of our pubs.”

Barbara Larkin, secretary of the Bishops Cannings Youth Football Club, said: “This has come as a real surprise. We had no idea they were thinking of leaving.

“We know this application has made the village very unhappy, but it is not true to say most people are against it.

“Some are for it but don’t want to put their heads above the parapet for fear of more unpleasantness.”

One resident, who asked not to be named, said Mr Conroy is over-reacting to the situation.

He said: “There are very few arguments. The vast majority of people who go to the pub are against the application, so there has only ever been one argument.”

I'm very sad to say that this isn't the first I've heard in recent weeks of Coate residents allegedly bullying people. People supporting the kids football pitch and their families have apparently been verbally abused too.

As everyone knows I am against the application. What I would say is that, although it may have caused some discomfort in the village to say arguments have been caused in the pub is simply not true.

Only one resident supporting the application (me!!!) goes in the pub. I have not had an argument with anyone on the subject.

The simple answer for the landlords here is to ban the topic as a subject for discussion!!!

Does this also mean that the fireworks display went ahead without the appropriate health and safety restrictions being adhered to?

As someone who helped out on the night I find this a bit worrying.

I personally think the residents of Coate have lost their community spirit, and I am ashamed to call myself a resident.

When I was growing up in the village it had nothing to offer.

David and Brian are wonderful people and it will be a shame to see them go. However if they are going to let this get to them personally then I suppose they have no choice.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion WHATEVER it may be, but is it really worth the residents of Coate falling out over?.

Again I wish to voice my disappointment in all parties involved.

My son has trained with the football club in the past, when it first re-located to coate . at first it was well organised with all parents being asked to frequent the pub and not abuse parking , this worked nicely , however when the founders of the club ( neal and shelley ) were not supported by fellow members and left the situation changed .The new broom at the club didn't communicate with the landlords as well and thus the animosity started ,resulting in the loss of a wonderful football pitch which was a credit to Neal ,Shelley and the few parents who could be bothered to help ( its not just a child minding service you others ). Anyway back to the pub i frequented it on evenings when my son trained and found the hospitality and beer excellent . I found it a very welcoming place so i find it a real shame that the area and not just Coate are loosing the landlords.
A few final thoughts ;where would the residents like the children to be , outside exercising and enjoying themselves or sat in front of a playstation or worse still causing vandalism in the area/town. We were all young once or can some of the protesters not remember that far back . The tit for tat really needs to stop and both parties need to talk ,the football club got to greedy with the use of the pitch and exceeded the original times for use . In an ideal world they would invite Neal and Shelley back into the club with open arms to help resolve this and also help the club grow from strength to strength. This club is a wonderful asset for the area and needs support

Hear hear moonraker, agree common sense needs to be sought.

It is interesting to note that at the very beginning the pub were happy to have the football club in the field next door. It was only when a change of running caused problems. Perhaps a compromise can be reached!!

hendyphilhendy,thank
s . perhaps this could be a start if more read it . A village doesn't need to be split over children enjoying themselves does it.Good landlords are hard to find , and you don't want to be left with managers coming in for a few months at a time and then leaving.it would be nice if the landlords could be persuaded to stay .As for the football club the boys need more support/players .The coaches need more support , PLEASE COME BACK NEAL AND SHELLEY .your club need you .

I note today that my response has been removed for some reason, so here it is again!

As one of the landlords concerned in the original article and the above letter, I must thank Mark for this kind words, and also for pointing out the errors in the article that the journalist promised to apologise for. I also thank JHDevizes for his comments also.

Our decision to leave The New Inn was not taken lightly, and was a very hard decision to make – during out two and a half years at The New Inn we have made many friends, and will be sad to leave them all being when we go in the New Year.

As stated by Mark, we have indeed been the subjects of two hatred poster campaigns, being investigated by Wiltshire Police. There are significant dates – the BCYFC were asked to vacate the field and the first poster appeared. The team vacated the field, and the same weekend the second poster appeared. These are significant, and have prompted the Police to investigate. The team were reported to have said that if they could not have football on the field, then they would ensure that the bonfire and firework night would not go ahead either. Low and behold, with a week to go, there was an “anonymous” complaint to Kennet Council Environmental Department, suggesting we could not comply with regulations. After intervention by the Parish Council, we were allowed to proceed after all. This has also been reported, and the Police are checking with the Environmental Department to ascertain the name of the complainer, and question them also, if there is a link to the poster campaign.

All objection letters written by residents of Coate are based on planning issues and are factual, and not emotional issues, which are basically irrelevant to planning, and those villagers who have written have, in the main, only written one letter, yet Phil seems to think that those to Kennet and the Gazette, some 20 letters now, are helping the cause – they are not really, and are providing a talking point – have you seen the latest letter yet????

I could go on more, but it is pointless really. Phil, let the subject drop, let Kennet Planning Department do their work without more pointless reams of letters from yourself which are not helping the supporters (indeed, they are tending to help the objectors, as you are baffling people and muddying waters, in that they will probably be disregarded by the committee), and then we can all live a quieter life, albeit in a different county. If it is passed, then we will have to live with it, and, conversely, if it is refused, then carry on at Green Lane, until a SUITABLE location can be found. In other words, GIVE IT A REST!
