Cinema gets star parking treatment

Kennet District Council has agreed to reserve parking for staff at the Palace Cinema and Angel Bingo Club in the Market Place.

People ignoring the signs saying staff only risk getting a £50 parking fine.

A spokesman for Angel Bingo said: “We have lost our parking spaces at the back of the club due to the redevelopment work going on.

“They are building a new car park and when that is complete, we will be able to park there.

“But for the next few weeks we have nowhere to park so we approached Kennet for permission to have two reserved spaces at the front of the club.”

In fact, only one member of staff drives to work and the other is reserved for owner John Angel, who drives up at least once a week from Southampton.

Deliveries are also being made at the front of the building until the work at the rear is finished.

A spokesman for Kennet District Council said: “The cinema owners have a legal right of way from New Park Street to parking spaces at the back of the cinema.

“During the development of the Northgate site, the access to the area has been obstructed by the installation of drainage and storage tanks.

“Following negotiations with the cinema, several parking spaces in Northgate Street have been temporarily allocated to enable the continued operation of the cinema.

“This temporary arrangement will be concluded at the end of this week.”

Pathetic! so what they might have to walk a few extra steps to work! big deal! Other SUCCESSFUL businesses dont get this sort of treatment.

Some people see the cinema as a facility for the town. Sometimes it is under-used. Often it's packed out. By the sound of it, they pay for a couple of parking spaces. Whilst these are unavaialble, they've been given replacements. What's the problem with that?

I don't mind the area being used for deliveries but there is a long stay car park, approximately 3 minutes walk, and it is very cheap compared to many town car parks.

They should be made to park their like anyone else.
