Calne Town FC committee members have paid tribute to chairman Brian Hillier who died on Thursday.

The former Swindon Town chair died at Swindon Hospital after suffering a stroke and a brain haemorrage.

Committee member John Rumming said: "The news has come as a complete shock to me.

"Brian was a fantastic man who lived for football. He loved all sports but football was his passion."

The father-of-two was well known in Calne through his flooring and blinds business on Wood Street.

Mr Rumming said: "He was well liked in the town because he was great fun.

"We used to take the mickey out of each other all the time. Brian had a wicked sense of humour.

"He was just a nice, laid back guy. He was laid back in his look of life. If you told him what you had to do he would stand back and let you get on with it in your own time."

Mr Hillier had spend time as a scout for Birmingham City but is best known for his time spent as chairman of Swindon Town Football Club.

Mr Rumming said: "He was chairman here a few years ago, before moving to Swindon, so he had already worked his way up through the club and it made sense for him to chair the committee again.

"When his son Simon became manager of Calne Town he would come and watch. It did not take long before we asked him to join the committee.

"Since his return the team was on the up. He had great contacts and worked hard to make us a better club.

"Brian's death has come as a complete shock to me. I had spoken to him on Wednesday and I was expecting to hear from him on Thursday.

"We are all dumfounded by this massive loss. It is like someone has switched off the light."

Calne secretary Andy Brewer said he will be sorely missed.

"I got on very well with Brian, we used to go to all the games and Western League meetings together," he said.

"He had got the club back on its feet after it had been down in the doldrums.

"He will be sadly missed, I will certainly miss him."

Both Calne and Swindon Town have announced they will hold a minute's silence prior to their matches this afternoon in honour the former chairman.

Calne team members will sport black arm bands and the flag will be flown at half mast.
