THE traffic chaos caused by the M4 pile-up this morning has started to ease in and around Chippenham.
The westbound carriageway of the motorway is now fully reopened and the eastbound lanes are expected to reopen within the next hour.
The traffic jams into Chippenham have almost completely cleared as have those along the A429 to Malmesbury.
Chief Inspector Ian Copus, who is heading the investigation, said: "It is still too early to say what happened or to speculate if anyone is to blame.
"Our top priority this morning was to make sure that the casualties at the scene, of which there were 13, were taken care of.
"We are now looking at the road surface on the Eastbound carriageway to make sure it is safe to reopen."
Anyone with information on the crash should call Chippenham Police on 0845 408 7000.
