POLICE are urging people to remember basic personal safety advice after a woman was attacked while walking alone in Chippenham.

The incident happened at 10.45pm on Monday when a woman was walking behind the Pewsham shops when a man grabbed and assaulted her.

The man, described as white, late 20's, very short hair and wearing a hooped earring in his left ear, then rang away in the direction of the Pewsham estate.

The woman was left unhurt.

A spokesman for Wiltshire Police said: "We would urge all people to remember basic personal safety issues such as using well lit areas, not walking alone and being vigilant about your surroundings."

Anyone with information on the incident in Pewsham should contact Nicola Cadfrey at Chippenham Police on 0845 408 7000, or anonymously, on Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.

But a Lady SHOULD be able to walk alone. What the police are saying is that they are not capable of policing the town satisfactorily.

Agreed. Scumbags seemingly everywhere now :-(

When they find the culprit hopefully the system will do the right thing and bang them away and not slap them a £20 fine and a slapped wrist.

I agree. The police are to busy trying to catch people speed.

Whatever the arguments for/against the police, they're not going to be everywhere at once.

Which is more important stopping people getting attached or catching people speeding? Ask yourself that question.

That wasn't my point. My point is that even if all the police were trying to stop people being attacked, they couldn't be everywhere at once.

Difficult not to run in the direction of Pewsham estate when the shops are positioned in the middle of it. What crap reporting

I'm surprised there's no CCTV at the rear of Tescos.

The problem isn't due to the police not doing their job or only being interested in speeding, it is down to lack of police within the system, which is yet again down to government cuts! the police cant be everywhere at once and catching speeders is important to save lifes. They also do a look of work behind the scenes which no one takes into consideration. A lone female should by rights be able to walk anywhere at night but unfortunately the world is no longer safe enough for that and females should be more cautious.

The police never seem to be around when you want them!! but I have to agree with Blaiz - unfortunately us girlies can't afford to walk around on are own anymore, its a sad world nowadays but we just can't risk it!! best wishes to the lady that has suffered this horrible attack though, you would think Tesco's would have CCTV in this day and age!!

And go where? It's actually quite a safe town compared to most in the UK. The fact that this sort of thing is reported and is a rare incident proves it: some other places it happens so often that no longer makes the news!

Every single time I read Weirdbeard's comments (of which there are many) he runs Chippenham down the drain - in fact you have nothing good to say about the place at all. Why don't you do all of us a favour and leave it then? I agree with rosco - yes there are bad things happening in Chippenham but nowhere near as bad as in other places. We should be finding solutions, not sitting around bemoaning the facts - for sure they are not about to change!

Its about detterant there is not a sufficient penalty for this type of offence.
Attacking people in the street should equal prison every time.
Even if he is caught which is probably unlikely he is probably a junkie will get a referal order and asked to behave.
Random foot patrols in problem areas might help occassionally but the reality is that the police can not be in all places at once all the time.
Dangerous drivers are criminals too and need to be dealt with.

What a ridiculous argument....speeding drivers are at fault for most of the deaths on our roads and the police have seperate traffic cars to deal with that issue. Unless someone is going to give the police a crystal ball tp predict when these attacks will happen...i guess we will keep reading about it in the papers..But I do hope the victim is ok...not much sympathy on here!!

Nonsense. Nearly all deaths on British roads are though driver error - not excess speed.

Wake up Walter - with ideals like that you're starting to sound like a Labour voter.

Criminals only act when they think they can 'get away with it'. Meaning that you would need a copper every 50 yards to prevent crime from occuring.

It is unfair to blame the police for the loss of decency, respect, morals and self-worth that this country's inhabitents have adopted.

There are about 65 million people in the UK now - 35 million more than the World Health Organisation say is the ideal number for harmonious existance.

Chris is right. 95% of studies show that crashes and accidents are caused by people paying attention. Only something like 7% of deaths on the road are caused by speeding. It is also a proven fact that speed cameras cause more accidents than they prevent, because people slam on the breaks trying to slow down, or spend more time looking for them than, rather then where they are going.

I have left it - I have to come to Chippenham to work. All you lot do is say "bang them up" and blame the Poles.

It's not about "construing" anything. You peddle out the same stupid lines about immigrants getting a better deal than people who were born here, without bothering to think for yourself.
