Doherty makes art for artery's sake

Rocker Pete Doherty stunned organisers of an art exhibition when he submitted a picture - drawn in his own blood.

The We Love Marlborough group approached the Babyshambles singer, who lives in a rented house in Savernake Forest, to ask him if he would support an exhibition called Get In The Gallery.

The exhibition, aimed at four to 18-year-olds, appeals for entrants to submit a painting or drawing on a postcard.

Mr Doherty was approached by WLM committee member Peter Davison, who is also chairman of Marlborough Chamber of Commerce to help publicise the exhibition.

"Without hesitation he said he would not only be delighted to support it but would also do a postcard painting for it,'' said Mr Davidson.

Mr Doherty, who is touring in Belgium with his band, said: "It's a really good idea and I'm happy to be able to do something for it.'' But the organisers were taken aback when he submitted his postcard painting showing his Babyshambles Band done in blood.

He had annotated it with musical clefts and a poem in French.

Mr Davison said: "It's clear that his knowledge of French is superb.

"The aim of the exhibition is that it's anonymous and people will only learn who the artist is if they buy a postcard,'' said Mr Davidson.

"It should be pretty to ascertain which one is Pete Doherty's because true to his style he has painted it in blood.

"I can't think we will get many postcards painted in blood, not unless one of the children had a nosebleed while doing theirs."

Other members of Babyshambles have also painted postcards for the exhibition which runs from July 8 to 10 at the Morgan Boyce Gallery in Hughenden Yard, Marlborough.

Let me get this clear. Mr Peter Davison asked Pete Doherty, a man famous for his drug taking, to support an art exhibition for 4-18 year olds.
What a role model to pick Mr Davison, I salute you.

Can you think of a notable living artist with a totally clean reputation, you cantankerous idiot?

Rolf Harris.

I find the idea of any art exhibition straddling the age ranges of 4 to 18 quite baffling.

But I do tend to agree with Bob - if Doherty is the best icon they can come up with for potentially pre-school and primary age children then we really are scraping the barrel.

Joey, I think you have you missed the point somewhat.
What I am merely trying to point out is that Pete Doherty is a questionable individual to use as a 'supporter' of an exhibition for children. Would you not agree?

Will that be the next big thing at pre-school? Draw a picture of mum or dad (or 'carer') in your own blood? How did they explain this picture to the 4 year olds? I'd like to have been there!

Jesus, even when this man tries to do something nice, people put him down. Give the guy a break for goodness sake! People often seem to overlook the many things that Doherty does for Charity's etc. but are very quick to focus on his 'drug-taking'.

That's the trouble Marie, that is all he is "famous" for.

I don't rate his music and, actually, if record sales are anything to go by only a miniscule number of buyers/downloaders do.

He is famous to most of the population for being nothing more than being a smackhead. If you don't believe me conduct a straw poll the next time you are down the pub or at work.

I think that before doubting the intelligence of the children/teenagers you should bear in mind that Doherty's fans are generally not influenced by his drug use. If they are influenced by anything it would be by his music (which, like it or not is undeniably a very strong talent, lyrically stronger than alot of music out there) which is a perfectly good influence. He is not a 'bad' or 'scummy' person, infact he is a very good person who happens to have an illness, albeit brought on himself. If you don't like to hear gossip (which 90% of the time is false, twisted, or cut-and-pasted) stop listening to gossip/reading tabloids, I have. After all, how many of you have actually listened to his music? I recomend Albion...
Any person with half a brain isn't going to take drugs/cut/harm themselves because "potty pete does". And lets face it, if they do then you are kidding yourselves that they wouldn't have done it anyway, whether drinking out on the streets age 13, carrying a knife in their pockets, trying various drugs etc. If they are in a mind set to do something because of a celebrity then they will do so at some point anyway, give the man a break - he isn't the source of the worlds problem.
Personally, i think it's great that Babyshambles are doing their part for a good cause.

I have in fact listened to a few pieces of Pete's music. And I like it, I like it a lot. He is indeed a very talented individual. He also has his problems which are well documented. While he has these problems I just think it would be for the benefit of the wider community if he was not involved in projects involving children. Would he not be a much better role model if he overcame these problems and came out as a 'clean' man? I think that would send a much better image out to the young people society.

I'm more concerned that Pete has his own columnist within the Gazette. Not a week goes by, without him getting another story published.
