EXCITEMENT is building at St John's School in Marlborough where former England soccer star Stuart "Psycho" Peace will help it achieve a very special goal on Monday.

Pearce, the former Manchester City and Coventry City player, will cut the first turf to signal the start of the new £26 million building programme.

Invited guests only will join students and staff in the grounds of the Stedman Building where Pearce, who was capped 78 times, will cut the first sod.

It will mark the beginning of the end of the school being houses in two sets of building a mile apart.

Developers Crest Nicholson have paid £25million for the lower school site in Chopping Knife Lane where 174 homes will be built.

Head teacher Patrick Hazlewood has campaigned for ten years to get the school united on one site.

It was an uphill struggle with opposition from some residents and from some Marlborough councillors.

It is hoped the new school will be open in October 2009 when the current Year 10 students will be its first sixth form.

I'm glad someone mentioned football - I was just trying to think what is more boring than spreading cow manure on my 8-acre field. Now I know -football.
