Pewsey women in Relay for Life event

TWO women who wanted to do something positive for Cancer Research have teamed up to run the Pewsey Relay for Life in July.

Katie Day and Marie Hattersley are looking for families and groups to take part in a 24-hour relay event on Coopers Field in Ball Road, next to the Coopers pub.

They want enough people to take part to ensure that people are walking around the field around the clock from Saturday July 19 to Sunday July 20.

There will be Relay for Life events taking place this summer all across the country in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Mrs Day and Mrs Hattersley are planning to make their event as much a party as an athletic event.

The are seeking teams of between eight and 15 and inviting them to camp out on Coopers Field.

They are planning a festive atmosphere during the day on Saturday with a huge party in the evening, with walkers keeping the relay momentum going on the track.

Between now and the event itself the teams are expected to raise as much money as they can, by whatever means they choose, for Cancer Research UK.

Mrs Day said: "I was looking into volunteering for Cancer Research and they pitched to me the idea of getting up an event in Pewsey."

There were already established venues across Wiltshire for the annual Race for Life - Marlborough's is on Sunday June 1 at the College - so the charity's fund raising advisors suggested a Relay for Life.

Mrs Day said the Relay for Life idea was imported from the USA where it originally started.

She emphasised that the Pewsey event was about having fun rather than just a 24 hour running event.

"It is going to be a 24-hour event to symbolise the fact that cancer never sleeps," said Mrs Day.

Throughout the day and evening there will be live music, barbecues and a festival atmosphere.

"It will not be just an athletic event so anybody, regardless of how fit they are, can join in and enjoy the day."

The women plan to have cancer survivors taking part in the first lap to raise awareness of the fact that many people do get over cancer.

The event is suitable for all ages and it is for men and women.
