A 24-year-old man accused of trying to rob an Old Town mini market has been remanded in custody.

Christopher Crawford appeared before Swindon crown court on bail in connection with the alleged attempted robbery.

But he was remanded in custody by Recorder Ian Pringle QC after the court heard he had nowhere to live.

No charge was put to Crawford, of Blackthorn Close, Wootton Bassett, and he did not enter any plea.

The case was adjourned to Friday June 20 when he is expected to enter a plea to the charge of attempted robbery.

Crawford is accused of trying to rob the Hythe Mine Market on Hythe Road, Old Town, on Friday April 4.

It is alleged that store keeper Memis Dogus disarmed a balaclava-clad man who was brandishing an axe and hammer during an incident at the store.

The 47-year-old was about the close to the store shortly before 10pm when the alleged raider demanded he hand over £50 before producing the tools.
