Wild West-style brawl in Malmesbury

2:51pm Wednesday 5th March 2008

ARMED police officers were called to Malmesbury town centre on Saturday night to break up a brawl involving 50 youths.

The trouble started in The Guildhall wine bar in Oxford Street when staff asked a group of lads from Chippenham for proof of age.

A confrontation began and the group was set upon by other males from the Malmesbury area.

The fracas exploded out the doors of the wine bar onto the street resulting in what one eyewitness described as a scene from the Wild Wild West.

Police from Malmesbury, Wootton Bassett, and Cricklade were called to break the gang up and were supported by an armed response unit.

Landlord Colin Pike said: "We have had a problem of late with people under age sneaking in and I had a good chat with the staff and we have been extra vigilant lately.

"We had a mob of lads in from Chippenham and I asked for ID.

"Not all of them had it so I said they could stay but no alcohol and they then started nicking other people's pints.

"I then asked them to leave and that's when it all kicked off.

"They threatened one of my staff saying they'd come back and knife him."

Mr Pike also said he would like to see more police at weekends in the town centre and he has also called for CCTV to help deter trouble "I'm trying to take some positive out of this though and show people we won't put up with underage drinking.

"I'm a bit damned if I do and damned if I don't but at the end of the day it is my pub and my license on the line if I don't take it seriously."

Brian Slade, an owner of Abbey Taxi's was working when the brawl took place, and said: "It really was like something off the Wild Wild West. My drivers refused to go up that end of town while it was going on.

"There must have been a dozen police cars it spilled all the way down the town centre.

"I've lived in Malmesbury for 39 years and in that time things have gone from a well behaved group of people to total disorder.

"It is a known fact that they are serving people in pubs who are intoxicated.

"The problem always starts in the pubs and then spills out into town.

"I want to go back to the times when the police were walking around the town talking to people and they were the ears and the eyes.

"I've told my drivers to stay away from the problems and not to pick up anyone aggressive.

"Oxford Street is a total, total fiasco on a Friday and Saturday night and it's because people have no respect for the law."

Inspector Mark Levitt, at Wootton Bassett police said: "A group of youths came to Malmesbury not causing any trouble and they had gone into a public house and there was a question over their age.

"A confrontation started inside and other locals started attacking them.

"We had four arrests on the night and they have been bailed pending further enquiries.

"A number of persons are to be arrested in coming days.

"It is a very very rare occurrence in Malmesbury and we are not going to tolerate any violent behaviour."

Two ambulances were called to the scene and several people were treated for cuts and bruises but no one was seriously injured.

Police are still keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident on 0845 408 7000.

Not being funny but the article says Saturday and the caption under the image says Friday. IA know you reporters are busy what with listing dogs going to crufts and people being tormenteed by kids using play areas but come on this is a pretty obvious mistake.

well my brother was involved in that and it was in no way anyone from chippenhams fault so to call them a mob is disgusting. The reporter should get some of her sodding facts straight before printing such atrocious lies!!! It was a vicious attack against those from chippenham, which actually included girls - there was only 15 of them - against 35 malmesbury. Also wouldn't believe a word that landlord said. And it was on FRIDAY night, she couldn't get that right! I am furious with this article.

Regardless of how many people were involved or on what night this took place, the problem is that Malmesbury's police presence is a joke. This will continue to happen as long as the police station is open for a couple of hours a week in a town that is growning on the scale that Malmesbury is. The Wiltshire Constabulary need to pull their finger out, open up the station and have more police in the town on weekends.

Lets face it, you will continue to have trouble there, as long as the main troublemakers know, that any police are going to have to travel from Chippenham, Melksham or whatever.

i wouldnt believe anything the paper say because they don't have a clue what their going on about! ha the owner of the pub collin fry knows that underage people drink in his pubs and he continues to serve them because people in malmsbery tell me this, he's just trying to make it sound like he's doing his job well to the public but it's rubbish so i wouldnt believe anything the papers have said, he even hit my friend and was getting very aggressive at the time, he stood up for malmsbery the whole way. Police might want to think about closing his pub down but that wont happen because the police don't know how to do their job, the malmsbery police were an absolute joke, didn't know what they were doing bless them. And i didn't notice anything in the paper about girls being hit by malsbery boys? In which case they were :) well done gazzette and herald give yourselves a pat on the back, fantastic job (Y)

If you "kids" spent more time studying and learning to spell and less time "willy waving" and trying to act like grown ups then articles like this will never grace these pages. This is the sort of response I would expect from an uneducated fool like yourself Gilsey, education is only as boring as you, the recipient, makes it. The term "willy waving" is not an old school saying (not "word" as you suggest, as the term "word" relates to a single saying. I think you meant "words" as in the plural, as willy waving is two words), The phrase relates to imature individuals like yourself who think they are hard and clever but in reality are nothing more than a stain on the landscape. You have a choice now Gilsey, reply with an immature remark and show your true colours or stay quiet and rise above what has been said. I wonder what you will decide?

captain sensible, wilts says...
8:53pm Tue 11 Mar 08

P.S. Gilesy, you have contradicted yourself (look the big word up in the dictionary if you are having trouble understanding that one). You say in a previous post "and I hope the kiddies who concussed my mate go down". The definition of a "kid" in the oxford dictionary is a "child", so did your mate get attacked by children?? If so then perhaps we are breeding some very good stock here in Malmesbury.

Gilesy's education aside, who cares if they were underage, is that now reason for hospitalising three people? Or perhaps being from a town ten miles away is reason enough? Also, trying to put someone down, and obviously winding them up is hardly an "adult" thing to do Captain. You seem to be trying to prove you're more intelligent then Gilesy, then why don't you rise above it and stop baiting him.

Yes It Was Our Own Fault We Was In Pub UnderAge
Yes My Friends Started A Scene For No Reason
Yes We Were Underage
. The law is there for a reason. As you can see people, the quotes speak for themselve, not only is Gilesy admitting to breaking the law by being in a public house and procuring alcohol underage but he also admits that his friends started a scene for no reason.
We Have Been Made Such Twats
nobody has made you such twats, You did that yourself.

The Other Quotes Are Right But Second One Is Directed At 'Titus' Malmsbury. I Know We Was Underage Etc But Because Of That My Friends Deserved 8 People Kicking Him On The Ground ? When He Dint Even Touch Alcohol At The Pub Just Before He Came .. Is That Right ? No We Didn't Make Ourselves Look ****'s .. We Went Their For A Good Time But My Mates Came Out Battered For What ? Because If EveryOne Told Truth There Is No Actual Reason That Justifies The Violence Given.

I see rising above it was a hard task and that baiting a teenager was too much of a temptation.

Gilesy, your responses are not helping your friends at all. Your account of what happened also somewhat differs from those that I have heard.

Was You Even There ? Because If You Was You Would Admit Truth And Say Yes My Friends Started A Scene For No Reason.

I believe Captain, that Gilesy is attempting a rhetorical question "If you were there you would see that the kids were beaten up and a scene was caused for no reason" and is in no way stating that the group of teenagers from Chippenham were at fault.

"Basically When I Said You Would Admit Truth An Say My Friends Started A Scene .. Im Basically Meaning Im That Titus Person An Im Sayin What He Should Be Saying."
It's just a load of unintelligible garbage.
I agree with Anonymous666 that you're not doing your mates any favours by admitting you were underage and your mates started a scene for no reason. But is that what you meant?
I think you should go back to school and actually learn how to make yourself understood. I honestly believe it would help your case.

OK Gilsey, perhaps I have been a bit harsh on you but it was for a reason mate. Firstly I apollogise for baiting you, secondly I apollogise for the way in which the law has let you down and by the term "law" I dont refer to the police but the way in which Mr Pike did not adhere to his Licence and enforce a sensible approach to this problem and let underage youths drink in his establishment. I have frequented the Guild Hall on many occasion and have seen first hand the mindless violence that does happen once alcohol is abused, I also am aware that the Guild Hall has "bouncers" that are not SIA (security industry association) licensed.
Gilsey, if its an apollogy you are after, then on behalf of society I am sorry. Does that change anything?

This is pathetic.....this is not some kind of insult page it is the gazette and herald website and leaving a comment on here is to give views not insults!
Gilesy is right, these innocent people come into malmesbury to have a good time and socialize like every other young person and they are then asked to leave town by "yobs", in doing so they get chased and beaten up for no reason!
It takes a man to start a fight but a real man to walk away from it all!

Everything in this report for the newspaper is false and only the innocent people will know this, they did not steal drinks, they did not cause trouble and so what if they were underage drinking? the guild is full of underage drinkers and without these underage drinkers that pub would not be bringing in the money it does. As for Colin Pike, he does not deserve a license, he abuses the privaliges he has by telling a load of white lies to the newspaper. He was not at all interested in sorting out the trouble that night and his only worry was that he was going to get into trouble.

Hopefully these Malmesbury "yobs" have learned their lesson. It is so sad that these other teenagers will not be able to return to Malmesbury again on a Friday evening because of this, they were innocent and many of these people had been coming to Malmesbury weeks before this happened.

Its okay for the Malmesbury yobs to go into Chippenham, go to that college ect but it is not okay for them to come into Malmesbury? Does not seem right....people can go where they wish to and no one belongs to a certain town, its just pathetic!

The Gazette should do a complete re-run of this story, written by a professional journalist and with statements from both sides. I would like to point out that none of the "Chippenham yobs" have been charged with anything whereas the same cannot be said of the patrons of the Guildhall. Point proven and poor journalism proven.
