Thieves target sheds

DETERMINED thieves struck six sheds across Calne in a spate of Boxing Day burglaries.

Police received reports of a string of the burglaries throughout the evening.

It was sixth time lucky for the thieves who after striking four times in Broken Cross and once in The Glebe finally found valuables in a shed in McCauley Square.

Thieves made off with £500 worth of fishing equipment from the shed.

The burglaries are the latest in a three-month spree of shed thefts all believed to be carried out by the same people.

Police are warning people to be extra vigilant in storing valuables in their outdoor sheds.

Sgt Steve Dixon of Calne Police said: "A lot of people store valuable equipment in their sheds which can be expensive to replace. We advise people to mark their valuables and follow our crime prevention advice detailed in our security leaflet."

Advice in the security leaflet includes lining the shed with plywood sheeting, gravelling paths as a noise deterrent and chaining all light goods to heavier garden equipment.

Police are also asking people to consider installing a battery operated shed alarm or storing valuable equipment elsewhere.
