A KEEN family of bikers who regularly cycle the Kennet and Avon canal have taken part in an adventure initiative to ride through the canal on a water bike and collect as much rubbish from the water as possible.

Chris Ward, his wife Helen and 12-year-old daughter Audrey spent the day on Tuesday travelling the length of the canal from their home in Pewsey through to Great Bedwyn.

Along the way they collected a small pile of rubbish to contribute to Britain’s largest ever community clean up campaign.

Mr Ward said: “We had a good day clearing up the canal, although it was a long day, I think we went through nine locks.

“We were actually pleased with how clean and well kept the canal was, as we didn’t see as much rubbish as we expected.

“We wanted to take part in the water bike adventure as it is a great community initiative.”

Hundreds of riders have signed up to take part in the water bike collective, a five month, 1,000-mile relay organised by a team of outdoor ambassadors from London-based adventure community, The YesTribe.

Since the launch of the water bike collective in April, 83 different riders have pedalled the water bike over 680 miles along Britain’s waterways, collecting over 36 tonnes of litter.
