VOLUNTEERS who run Devizes Youth Club are urging anyone who can offer them a permanent home to come forward.

The club, which met for years at the Southbroom Centre on the Devizes School site, has had to move out of the hall and has a temporary home at the Conservative Club.

But now committee members John Saunders and Annica Bowen have issued a plea to find a hall where it can not only meet but also store its equipment and have the chance to expand.

The club, known as Devizes Youthy, has had a difficult time since Wiltshire Council cuts back in 2014 meant nearly all of its youth workers were made redundant and youth groups became more and more reliant on volunteers.

Now the Southbroom Centre is undergoing refurbishment and is to become home to the Yarn Day Centre which caters for people with disabilities.

Wiltshire Council has said it might be possible for the youth club to return in the future but Mr Saunders said it was no longer suitable as the group was no longer able to set up its pool and table tennis tables at the centre.

Mr Saunders said: "We really need a hall in the town centre which is easy for the youngsters to get to and somewhere we can keep equipment. At the moment we meet just on Wednesday evenings but we would like to be able to add a second evening in the future.

"The Conservative Club has been very good too us but as it is a place that sells alcohol it is not ideal. We would really like to find somewhere new to call home by December."

A spokesman for Wiltshire Council said: "We are carrying out refurbishment at the Southbroom Centre at Devizes Leisure Centre for the Yarn Day Centre which uses the centre during the day.

“The youth club is an important addition to the town and we regularly support its activities through the area board. We also helped them find their temporary accommodation while this essential work takes place. Although the youth club is welcome to return to the centre once the works have completed, we understand they are now looking for a new venue in the town.”

The club would also like to hear from anyone who has a piece of land in the town centre where it could site a mobile building.
