OFFICIALS at Melksham Rugby Football Club have unveiled a GWR bench in memory of a player who collapsed and died.
The unveiling took place just before the kick-off of a memorial match for the club’s former 2nd XV prop forward Paul McQuillan, 41, who died last November.
Melksham RFC chairman Steve Harris said: “Paul was very well-liked and the bench is already being put to good use.”
Paul’s father, Graham McQuillan said: “Paul was my only son. That made him special.”
Melksham RFC hosted an inter-club match, with players wearing Melksham and Colerne shirts, to raise funds for Wiltshire Air Ambulance.
The former Wiltshire Police officer and Network Rail signalling engineer died after coming off the field in a match against Alfred’s Nomads 2nd XV at Marlborough.
With some of the money raised in Paul’s memory, Melksham RFC has also purchased a defibrillator which has already helped to save one life.
