AN UPTURNED vehicle was severely damaged by fire after being abandoned following an accident in Easton Lane near Chippenham on Monday.

The car appears to have rolled into a hedgerow following an accident at the Easton Lane crossroads off the A4 Bath Road near Chequers.

Robert Giles came across the scene on his way towards Corsham to see his mother Jean, who is in a care home.

He said: “I was passing down the road when I saw black dark smoke. To my surprise it was a car recently deposited near the hedge.

“Upon immediately parking the other side of the junction, the petrol tank or a tyre exploded.

“There was a cyclist and a motor bike rider near to where I had parked and I enquired if there was anyone in it to which the reply was negative. The driver must have decamped quickly.”

A fire crew from Chippenham were called out at 7.37pm to tackle the blaze using two breathing apparatus and two hose reels.
