SUBWAY sandwich shop raider Sean Porter has been jailed for seven years after creating a one man crime wave in Chippenham and surrounding towns.

Porter, 40, frogmarched a female Subway worker into the Chippenham branch when he appeared at the back door of the shop on The Bridge. He grabbed her in a headlock and frogmarched her into the premises, on The Bridge, demanding the takings, leaving with £232.

As a result of the raid the court heard that not only did the worker feel insecure but the branch ceased opening after 9pm.

Porter, who as on early release from prison for a bank robbery, also smashed his way into three businesses to steal more cash. But he denied robbing the Devizes branch of Subway and the charge was left to lie on file.

His first break in during the spate which started on January 20 was at the Cirencester branch of Subway when he went armed with an axe.

Two days later he attacked the Chippenham branch

On Tuesday February 27 he went in to Ladbrokes on Regent Circus, Swindon, just after 9am and asked if the store was open.

In February and March he also burgled Virgilio's Barber, Moredon Road, Eggelicious, on Wood Street, Swindon, and Crumps butcher in Royal Wootton Bassett, where he got £1,400.

He was finally caught after aggravated taking without consent in Gloucester when he drove a Toyota Yaris dangerously.

Porter formerly of Raleigh Avenue, Walcot, admitted three robberies, three burglaries, having an offensive weapon and aggravated taking without consent in Gloucester.

He denied a fourth robbery at Subway in Devizes in January.

Clare Fear, defending, said that he was sorry for what he had done but he was under threat over a debt he had.

She said he had experienced a terrible upbringing and realised he was facing a lengthy jail term for the latest offences.

"In his own words he deserves to be where he is and deserves to get the custodial sentence he will receive," she said.

Jailing him Judge Robert Pawson said "The fact is this: you have got an appalling record, 38 convictions form over 100 offences.

"There are 25 burglaries and this excluding matters taken into consideration of which there are many.

"Section 20 violence, but that was 20 years ago, weapons, multiple breaches of court orders and robbery, in 2016, for which you were on licence when you committed what amounts to your own one man crime wave, which started in February with the robbery of Subway."
