ROCK and roll memorabilia attracted attention worldwide, with bidders from the USA and China competing for lots, and sold for thousands of pounds.

Among the lots in Chippenham was an extremely rare vinyl record by The Beatles, which Wessex Auction Rooms director and auctioneer Martin Hughes had felt would be one of the most popular items.

He said: “One of the most collectable vinyl records is The White Album, the ninth studio album by The Beatles.

“What makes this album so collectable is that early copies were numbered on the front of the sleeve, and the lower the number the more valuable they are.

“Number 1 sold in 2015 for over £6,000 and in Friday’s auction we had number 432, which sold for just under £2,000. The person who sold it had no idea how valuable their collection was.”

Signed concert tickets and programmes from when Jimi Hendrix, The Move, Pink Floyd, The Amen Corner, The Nice, The Eire Apparent and The Outer Limits performed at the Colston Hall in Bristol on November 24, 1967 sold for £800.

The auctioneers were extremely excited when they found unique signed photos of The Who at the bottom of a box of signed vinyl records.

Mr Hughes said: “The Keith Moon signed photo sold for over £850. I knew it would do well.”

Other unique signed photos and signed vinyls were sold as a collection for £5,000, with all rights going to the new owner.

A 1966 match programme signed by the winning World Cup England squad and manager Alf Ramsay, a 1966 World Cup brochure and a ticket for the quarter-final at Wembley sold for £2,400.

The auction house is now collecting items for the next vinyl and music memorabilia sale.

If you have items you would like valued before deciding whether or not to sell, they can be taken to the auction rooms at Draycot Cerne Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm without appointment.
