THE deputy Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire David Scott joined in the fun when he opened a revamped BMX track in a village near his Devizes home on Saturday.

Mr Scott was joined by a number of councillors who sit on Devizes Area Board and members of the parish council in West Lavington when the track, that was first built in 2008, was re-opened.

Dave Blundell who is chairman of the parish's playgrounds committed, reminded everyone gathered about the history of the track which started back in 2007.

Mr Blundell said: "Today is a day of celebration because we have managed to refurbish the BMX track without breaking the parish piggy bank."

He thanked the area board for a grant which had made the project possible. He said: "We now have a terrific track."

Back in 2007 the village got behind plans of the youth club to raise cash for the original track and it managed to collect £14,000. A display put together by Mr Blundell showed the original park in 2008, a refurbishment carried out in 2015 and an attempt to improve it by riders in 2017.

After a display on the track by riders from Ramp Nation in Devizes the fete was opened.

One of the biggest attractions was the steam engine Lord Roberts who came back to Lavington after nearly 100 years away. The John Fowler B5 steam road locomotive was ordered by Holloway Bros of Market Lavington Brick & Tile Works and was delivered on December 31, 1900. On Sunday the engine moved on to the Vintage Meet in Market Lavington.
