BEER festival organisers were left with just three days to find big screens for punters at the Axford Beer Festival when England secured their place in the World Cup quarter finals against Sweden.

More than 300 people came to Jubilee Field on Saturday to try 14 different beers from nine breweries, including two from Ramsbury Brewery. Football fans gathered round two screens to see England go through to the semi-finals of the sports tournament.

Ashley de Safrin, governor of Ramsbury Primary School, of Partridge Piece, helped to organise the event and said: “The highlight of the day for me was probably seeing people screaming at the television while the football was on.

“I am not really into football but the fact that it was on created a great atmosphere. The day went extremely well.

“We learnt very early on, that if England were playing in the quarter finals, it could very well be on the same day as the beer festival.

“With three days to spare we managed to get two large screens with a suitable satellite connection and screen the match live. We managed to get three excellent bands, Bodge it and Scarper, a local duo playing popular tunes on acoustic guitars, Jamie R Hawkins, an award-winning singer and song writer and Echo, whose music encouraged folk onto the dance floor.”

Organisers have not yet decided if the event will be repeated next year, after confirming that the one-day event had taken more planning than originally expected.

The event raised hundreds of pounds which will go towards recuperating costs incurred by the village to set up ultra-fast broadband in the area.

Mr de Safrin continued: “Shaun and Hannah Barnett came up with the idea of the Axford Beer Festival following the on-going success of another beer festival near where they previously lived.

“Hannah is a professional events organiser and Shaun produces top-class special effects such as the display at the 2012 London Olympics.

“Ramsbury Estate (Mary and Will) have been nothing short of fantastic with all the help they have provided towards this event and other recent community activities such as the community ultrafast broadband. This powerful combination brought the beer festival confidently to life.

“We are a very small village but the professionally organised event allowed us to punch well above our weight. We are very grateful for all the help we received from everyone.” The festival took place on July 7.
