MOTORISTS who use London Road in Devizes are going to have to put up with weeks of traffic chaos in the hope that the outcome makes it all worthwhile.

Wiltshire Council cabinet minister Philip Whitehead promised last year he would take the blame if a plan to put traffic lights on the junction with London Road and Windsor Drive did not improve the morning rush hour.

Work on the scheme is due to start on July 23 and it is hoped it will be completed by the time schools re-open at the beginning of September.

Philip Whitehead chairman of the Community Area Transport Group, said: “When they are finished these works will ease congestion into Devizes and reduce countless hours of frustration and delay.

“It will also make a substantial contribution to the town’s economy, making transport much more convenient for businesses, and for commuters, shoppers and visitors, to get into Devizes.

“Clearly we regret any extra short-term delays, but I’m sure motorists will understand that any short-term inconvenience is well worth the long-term benefits.”

A Wiltshire Council spokesman said: "Some delays are likely during the seven-week project – but Wiltshire Council’s contractor, North Midland Contracting, will endeavour to get the job completed during the school holidays while traffic is at its lightest with no school runs and people are away on holidays.

"They will work six days a week, 8.00am – 5.00pm initially but to keep disruption to a minimum some work may need to be carried out during the evenings as well."

Temporary three-way traffic lights will be in operation and any road closures will be kept to restricted to night-times.

Laura Mayes Wiltshire councillor for Roundway said: “Devizes is a thriving town and by installing this smarter design at this busy point we will improve traffic flows and reduce congestion. I’m looking forward to being one of many who will benefit from these improvements.”

The project was identified as part of the wider Transport Strategy for Devizes which was developed through a process of consultation and analysis to support growth in the Wiltshire Core Strategy.
