TRAFFIC chaos came to Devizes town centre on Saturday lunchtime as fire crews were called out in force to Morrisons supermarket.

Staff and customers were evacuated from the store in Estcourt Street just before 11.30am after smoke was seen coming from one of the chiller units in the main store area.

Crews from Devizes, Calne and Melksham along with an aerial appliance from Swindon were called to the supermarket as a precautionary measure.

A fire service spokesman said: "The crews used a short extension ladder, air monitoring kit and a thermal imaging camera to ensure the scene was safe."

People were allowed back into the store at noon. Police advised drivers to avoid the area during the operation but traffic built up in the area. A Morrison spokesman confirmed no-one had been hurt.
