Year 6 pupils at By Brook Valley Primary School in Yatton Keynell learnt how to perform CPR as part of the British Heart Foundation Restart a Heart campaign.

Under the guidance of Dr Jeremy Astin, a consultant in Intensive Care Medicine at Great Western Hospital, Swindon, the pupils learnt the techniques required to Call for help, Push on the chest and Resuscitate a casualty until further help came.

Class teacher Mrs Henshall said: “In science we have been learning about the circulatory system and the function of the heart. The CPR session added a real-life element to our learning.”

“The children were very engaged and had lots of questions for Dr Astin throughout the session.”

The class add to the British Heart Foundation’s goal to train five million people by 2020.

Dr Astin said: “They now have the vital skills to improve someone’s chance of survival should the worst happen. They were a great group to teach and took it all on board very quickly”.

The British Heart Foundation are able to provide CPR training kits to workplaces and community groups. Details can be found on their website.
