FURIOUS villagers have joined forces to fight a plan which they say will see up to 100 HGVs travelling past their homes every day for nine months.

Residents in Langley Burrell have united against the plans to build a temporary ‘haul road’ from Upper Peckingell Farm and a bridge over the London to Bristol railway line to provide access from Parsonage Way in Chippenham to allow up to 650 new houses to be built at Rawlings Green.

They have formed ReACT - Langley Burrell Residents Against Construction Traffic - pointing out the haul road would see construction traffic travelling from the B4069 through Langley Burrell, along Maud Heath’s Causeway, past a number of Grade Two listed buildings.

Residents have raised concerns about safety, the damage a volume of HGV traffic will cause to the Maud Heath’s Causeway and houses that line the road.

ReACT member Saritha Pilbrow, 41, has lived in Peckingell for seven years. She said: “Our village is only small and we are very proud of our village.

“Our house is a Grade Two listed building and lorries will cause the whole house to shake, as well as others in the village. It will damage the buildings.

“There are already traffic cones in the road because it is collapsing and that is with normal traffic. What will happen when construction traffic is using the road?”

“It is so dangerous and it is going to be totally unbearable.”

Residents feel Parsonage Way, which was mentioned as an alternative route for the haul road, would be safer and more suitable.

Mrs Pilbrow added: “Parsonage Way is a wide road and HGVs can use it. There are houses, a low bridge and a hairpin bend through Langley Burrell.

“HGVs won’t fit along our road.”

Tina Milburn, 51, added: “Because most of the houses don’t have deep foundations it will damage them.

“If we have a truck drive past the whole house vibrates.

“There is no way those houses and buildings can withstand the vibrations. The road isn’t wide enough, I worry about that as well.”

The action group has also received the backing of MP James Gray, who said: “It seems strange to me that they should go through a peaceful little village like Langley Burrell. “Huge lorries every day will completely ruin a peaceful village. Residents are very upset and I agree with them.”

Both applications are due to be decided by Wiltshire planners at a future meeting.

A Wiltshire Council spokesman said: “As part of the standard planning process, all representations made on this application will be considered prior to a decision being made by the planning committee. No date has yet been set for it to be heard at committee.”
