A MELKSHAM gun retailer has opened a new shooting range after moving following the closure of the town’s Countrywide Farmers store.

Countryside Pursuits has moved to space above the Audi VW Garage on Lancaster Road on the Bowerhill Industrial Estate.

The business had occupied an area within the Countrywide Farmers store for six years since its launch.

Owner and director Paul Webb said: “We decided to seek new premises as soon as it became apparent in March this year that Countrywide Farmers would not be continuing.

“Through a recommendation from one of our regular customers, an excellent space was found which offers the exciting opportunity for the business to expand.”

Countryside Pursuits has now opened a new 10-metre air rifle range where local enthusiasts can practice shooting at targets, and is holding an open day on Saturday, July 7 from 9.30am-5pm for anyone interested.

The former soldier and police officer said: “The idea is thatWe are actively helping encourage responsible ownership of all firearms.”

He added: “For a long time there has been not a great deal of choice when it comes to shooting facilities local to Melksham and Trowbridge.

“We have set up a 10-metre range for the keen air rifle and pistol shooter, with the added bonus of an excellent shop to boot!”

The relocation has saved the jobs of the three staff as well as providing the possibility of further employment for others.

Mr Webb said: “The new facilities offer a friendly and comfortable club environment, along with experienced and knowledgeable staff to assist with any shooting related queries.

“The biggest advantage of the range is that it is open seven days a week in line with the shop, offering plenty of time to come and shoot at your convenience.

“We have also set up an online booking facility, so you can make sure that you have a lane booked well in advance and won’t turn up and be disappointed.

“It was a huge shame to see Countrywide Farmers disappear, but we have remained positive that some good will come from that.”

Mr Webb hopes to engage with local Scout groups, Air Training Corps, the Pony Club and other youth groups to run sessions to help educate and train keen youngsters in the safe use of air rifles.

The former soldier and police officer said: “The overall idea is that we are actively helping encourage responsible ownership of all firearms.

“We feel the industry needs to take ownership of this to help public opinion and the way the hobby is received in the wider world.”
