PARKING problems are set to continue for home owners frustrated with cars parking on the road opposite their driveway in Church Walk, Devizes.

Devizes Town Council planning committee members rejected Mr and Mrs Soper’s request to get double yellow lines painted in front of their home in a bid to reduce their parking frustration.

Double yellow lines currently start in Church Walk from outside number 52.

However, the Sopers believe that extending the double yellow lines would ease congestion along the narrow road.

During the meeting councillors showed little sympathy for the family, who moved into the home four months ago, and argued they had known the layout of the road when they bought the property.

Carol Soper wrote a letter to the planning committee two months ago which they discussed during a planning meeting on June 12.

She said: “It causes us problems getting into our spaces. There is a car there at the moment that hasn’t moved in two months and although it is parked up to the yellow lines this makes it really tricky for us to get into our parking spaces.

“The current lines do need repainting too.

“I would be happy to pay towards the service. If they were able to extend the lines this would improve things not only for us but our neighbour too, who has made similar request in the past.

“However, it is very easy for them to say no on this matter.”

Speaking following the meeting, Cllr Nigel Carter said: “There was little sympathy from councillors for the request.

“The home owner had moved into the house knowing full well what the circumstances were.

“Councillors felt that there was enough space to manoeuvre and the cost of putting in double yellow lines compared to one person’s request seemed disproportionate.”
