HISTORY will be brought to life at the weekend as re-enactment groups take over Salisbury Cathedral and give visitors a chance to find out what life was like during World War One.

A replica WWI trench will be created on the lawns and a World War One encampment including an 18 pounder cannon will be manned by costumed crew. Semaphore and Morse code will be demonstrated by Royal Corps of Signal Museum and WW1 medicine and veterinary care can be seen in exhibitions mounted by the Royal Army Medical Corps, Royal Army Veterinary Corps, and the Nursing and Dental Corps. Visit the Cathedral on June 9 and 10. at Salisbury Cathedral as part of the SSFA (Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association) Armed Forces Charity World War I Living History Weekend.

Col Stephen Oxlade, chair of Wiltshire SSAFA, said: “It is a wonderful way to reach families and young people, and to commemorate the centenary of the end of World War I, along with SSAFA’s work.”

Shrouds representing each day of the Great War will be laid out in the sacred Garth in the Cathedrals Cloisters. In total 1,561 small shrouded figures will be on display over the weekend.
