CUBS from Neston have raised an amazing £1,000 from their sponsored geocache hike.

Cubs aged eight to 10-years-old went on a six-mile forage around Corsham to find 18 hidden trinkets.

As part of the Scout’s A Million Hands Programme, cubs from the 1st Neston Cubs have been working hard on tackling dementia.

The A Million Hands is a community impact campaign, reflecting the Scout’s ambition to mobilise half a million people in support of social issues.

Each year, cubs get to choose between four issues to tackle, and this group decided on looking at dementia because of the disease resonating with some members of the cubs.

To mark the end of their project and to give it one final push, the cubs took park in a sponsored geocache hike and raised over £1,000 for charity which has been split between Dementia UK and Hungerford House care home in Corsham.

The geocache hike, which is a hike where those taking part track GPS signals to find hidden containers, took them 6 miles around Corsham, heading towards Lacock.

Cub leader, Guy Livingstone, said: “It is like a big treasure hunt. The rule is if you take something out you have to put something in so I had lots of discontinued scout badges that we put in there.

“The weather was ideal for the hike, warm and dry but cloudy. 30 Cubs had turned out for the hike along with six Cub leaders and four parent helpers.

“The cubs were split into two groups and set off with a 10 minute delay so that second team didn’t see where the first team was finding the hidden geocaches.

“In the end we found 17 and everyone who took part managed to get a little trinket out of the boxes.

“It was long for them, some of them struggled but the majority were still running around when we got back to the park in Corsham Estate.

“They were still running around when parents picked them up.

“I had loads of great feedback from parents and some may now have to take up Geocaching after being forced to by their children who all had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed the event.

Yesterday, members of the Cubs presented a cheque to Hungerford House.

Mr Livingstone added: “I am really proud of them.

“I have been with the Scout team nearly 15 years and this is the largest amount I’ve ever collected through sponsorship money.”
