THE Wiltshire Gazette & Herald and the Wiltshire Times is on the hunt for writers wanting to forge a career in journalism.
We have vacancies for an apprentice and a trainee reporter.
Editor Pete Gavan said: “We’re giving people the chance to take their first steps on the career ladder, with two exciting new projects which show how we are responding to the changing needs of newspapers and employers.
“Previous trainees have gone on to become parliamentary lobby correspondents for national newspapers, work for some of the country’s leading print and online media, help leading charities raise vast amounts of money to help others and work and travel the world.”
The trainee reporter’s role is a a two-year contract. During that time they will be trained in newsgathering and writing techniques, as well as in the skills needed to complete their National Council for the Training of Journalists Level 3 Diploma in Journalism through distance learning, including shorthand.
Apprentices will be trained on-the-job four days a week, with one day a week for distance learning through Darlington College.
“We have one reporter vacancy and will happily consider applications from anyone who is 18 and over, has good GCSEs including English and maths and who has passed, or is currently taking, at least 2 A-levels or equivalent,” Mr Gavan said. “A clean driving licence, or evidence of having begun lessons, is an advantage.
“Details of those interested in the apprentice positions will be forwarded to Newsquest centrally, where they are collecting a pool of suitable applicants which we, along with other papers across the country, can use as a resource for staff recruitment.
“If you love Wiltshire, are passionate about what makes it tick and enjoys writing, we want to hear from you.”
