ROYALTY lined the streets in Chippenham last weekend for a royal-themed scarecrow trail.

Members of the royal family, as well as television and film royalty, stood outside homes greeting visitors on the Redland School scarecrow trail at the weekend.

Organised by the Friends of Redland School, there were over 30 scarecrows for trail-goers to guess, and it wasn’t made easy.

With the trail landing on the weekend of the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, they decided it would only appropriate for this year’s theme to be royal, and scarecrow makers really did interpret the term royal in the most inventive of ways, with a Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Freddie Mercury and even a Burger King.

Vice chairman of Friends of Redland School, Lisa Pullin, said: “The trail was good and the weather was definitely on our side.

“A lot of people came out late in the afternoon, I think because the weather was a bit cooler as well.

“This is the second time we have done the trail, the first one had horrendous weather.

“We definitely went with the royal theme because of the royal wedding. We went for the same weekend that we had last year, as we didn’t want to have to compete with other trails in the area.

“People enjoyed it and said the scarecrows were great, but they said it was quite long, some were easier than others, and some definitely left people puzzled

“We made more money than we made last yea because we had a table top sale and a barbecue, which is amazing.

“We think we raised about £1,300, compared to the £700 we had last year.”

Money raised by this year’s scarecrow trail will be going towards revamping and redeveloping the outdoor space of the school. They are hoping the money will go towards creating an all-weather running track so pupils can carry on doing the daily mile whatever the weather.
