FOOTBALLERS from Wavin have raised enough money to fund a specialist Macmillan nurse for a whole week after playing their annual charity match.

Workers from distribution and production from the plastics firm in Chippenham exchanged their work boots for their football boots at Chippenham Town Football Club on April 29.

The game, which is in its third year and ended 5-2 to the distribution team, raised more than £1,100 for the cancer charity, which will help people with cancer get the advice and support they need.

“Despite the cold weather, the event was well supported by players and spectators,” said Paul Sandford, operational supervisor and a member of the charity committee.

“The company has supported Macmillan for the last couple of years and we are quite chuffed with how much we raised.

“The company sponsors Chippenham Football Club, so they lent us the grounds for the day, which was really nice for them and really nice for the teams too.

“A lot of our workers are based in Chippenham, so it was good to see them play 90 minutes of competitive football at their local ground for a good cause.

“Distribution have always had a good team, and although it is fairly balanced and competitive, they were able to take the win.”

The company started up the football match three years ago to help the company, which focuses heavily on its corporate social responsibility, raise much needed money for charities and organisations.

Now a staple event in the Wavin calendar, Mr Sandford and the rest of the charity committee are busy planning next year’s fundraising event.

“We want to thank everyone who made this event such a great success,” he added. “Especially everyone from the Wavin charity committee. We will of course be hosting this fixture again next year, and we are already looking forward to it.”
