CHIPPENHAM Bus Station is usually fairly quiet on Sundays, but last weekend it was abuzz with vintage buses.

Thanks to volunteers at the Bristol Road Transport Collection, more than 30 historic buses descended upon Chippenham for its vintage rally and running day.

The buses, with the oldest

dating back to 1934, were on display at Wiltshire College, and they took visitors on tours of Wiltshire, from the bus station to

Lacock and Castle Combe.

All the buses are privately owned and were lovingly restored by

enthusiasts who have worked hard to ensure they can return to the road again for everyone to enjoy.

Returning after a successful first year, William Staniforth, secretary of the Bristol Road Transport Collection, said: “It was a very successful day and a lot of people seemed to enjoy

riding around on the buses.

“We had amazing weather, and we even had an open-top bus, which people loved.

“Not only did we have buses ready at the bus station, we also had a display set up at Wiltshire College. We are very grateful to them for letting us use their car park as we couldn’t have staged the event without them, it was particularly helpful.

“The whole event was free too which is quite rare these days.

“We have had a lot of favourable feedback and people have said see you next year, so let’s see.

“We had people queuing to use the buses and what was nice was that we had buses going into

Lacock, which is particularly special.

“Riding on a vintage bus to a historical destination is great and makes it accessible.

“What was lovely was we had a person in a wheelchair who we were able to get onto one of the vintage buses, and families and others were able to take part in the day.

“Hopefully it is something that has brought people into Chippenham as well to spend money in the town.”
