FITNESS fans in Pewsey are preparing to get a glimpse of the new Vale Health and Wellbeing Centre which is on track to open in the autumn.

The £8.4m Vale Community Campus in Wilcot Road will have a swimming pool, gym and café area as well as becoming home to sports and community groups in the area.

Building work is ongoing, and Wiltshire Council confirmed the project is “on time and in budget”.

Jerry Kunkler, portfolio holder for leisure and sport and Pewsey councillor, said: “The roof is on now so everything is starting to look good.

“The next thing to go in is the air conditioning and then inside will be decorated and everything will start to look good.

“Membership at our temporary gym has actually gone up recently, so I think people are really keen to get in there and start using the facility.

“There will be a café going in as well as a gym that is double the size of the previous one. The family pool will be great too.

“The process began back in 2010 when Pewsey came on our radar. Since then we have developed in Corsham, Tisbury and Calne and after Pewsey, Melksham will be next.

“The work is on time and in budget, everything is looking to be finished by August 31 with an autumn opening.”

The campus will offer a fitness suite, four-lane 25m swimming pool, a sports hall and cricket nets.

It will also boast free parking for up to three hours and have electric car charging points and free wifi throughout the venue. Facilities also include a skate park for skateboarding, scootering and BMXing, along with the existing multi-use games area.

The old fitness centre was demolished in August 2017 to make way for the state-of-the-art complex. A fitness centre has been running at the site since 1967, when the community raised funds to pay for the workout suite.
